SCHOOL FEEDING PROGRAMMES
The South Africa Government runs the National School Nutrition Programme ( NSNP), which provides a nutritious meal to learners in schools in South Africa. The programme launched 17 years ago with a cold meal provided daily to only the poorest of learners at primary schools, and has progressed to now providing a daily, hot meal to all children in the selected schools. The programme also expanded to include secondary schools in 2009.
The National School Nutrition Programme provides a daily meal to more than 9 million children at 21 400 schools around South Africa. The total cost of which is over R5 billion per year. (Ref Annual report NSNP 2013).
